Vizsla Fun Day

Mom and I had a really busy weekend.

On Saturday, Glenn, Mom and I piled into the car and drove all the way out to Middle Island, NY, where the Vizsla Club of Long Island was hosting their annual Vizsla Fun Day.

It was being held in the Cathedral Pines Camping Area, and about 30 Vizslas and their families attended.

We met a couple of very nice Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and there was a special guest appearance by a Pharaoh Hound, too!

We all learned to do some agility (I wuff the tunnel!!!!) played some games, went through a rally obedience course, and had a lot of fun. Mom and Glenn also enjoyed the catered lunch, complete with exotic sandwich and Asian pasta salad.

But the most fun of all was that I got to see Mr. Eddie, and Mr. Rich!

I wuff Mr. Eddie.
I wuff Mr. Rich.

They are so nice to me and give me soo-ooo much attention! It was great. Mr Rich was in charge of the photo contest, and Mr. Eddie's entries won most of the prizes! Mr Eddie, also brought my friend Chatter over to play, but all she cared about were the birds. I wuff birds as much as the next Vizsla, but Chatter takes it to a whole new, neurotic level.

Mr. Eddie says that Chatter is going to be entered in the two specialty shows coming up this September, so we'll be able to hang out again soon!

Pool Time Photos

Mom finally brought her camera to the pool. Here are some glam shots for your enjoyment!

See how I always keep my back paws on the edge of the pool? It's more challenging than going all-in!

Seriously Hideous Intestinal Turmoil: Or S.H.I.T. for Short

WARNING: THIS IS GRAPHIC. COVER YOUR EYES IF YOU ARE FAINT OF HEART

I am a dog. I eat things that I am not supposed to. And my mom, well, she has to clean up the results.

There are several classifications of S.H.I.T.

Loosey Goosey -
Half-n-half - it starts one way and ends up another

Droppin' Da Bomb -
A mega load, usually when mom doesn't have appropriately sized baggies.

Cling-on -
When things hang-on by a thread.

A River Flows Through It -
I think you get the idea on this one.

So, today when my tummy really started to hurt, I knew I was in trouble. It rumbled. It shook. I had to get outside pronto. I wasn't sure if I would be vomiting or having a serious case of the S.H.I.T.s, but I knew it was going to be bad. Unfortunately, mom was at work, and I couldn't hold back the river any longer.

When mom came home she had a big mess to clean up! But she was patient with me and knew I really wasn't feeling well. I've never received so many hugs! After the Toxic Clean-Up of '06 was complete, we marched outside. Mom and I had to stop about every 20 minutes but since everything was mostly out of my system, it wasn't too bad.

I even managed to get some pool time in.

Needless to say, there was no dinner for me.

Splish, Splash

Since it has been so hot here in the Big Apple, mom and I have been frequenting the 105th Street Dog Run pool. I might have mentioned it previously, but this summer it is even more official, with a premanent Astro Turf "hill" leading up to it and proper drainage.

I wuff to stand in the water and splash around. And I have even made up a new game.

I put two or three tennis balls into the water and paw at them, trying to get them to pop up out of the water. The challenge is that I also keep my two back paws on the ramp, out of the water, so only my front half is getting wet. This way I can easily spring out of the water, if another dog tries to get in on the game.

I prefer to be in the pool all by myself.

Hybrid Toy

With all this talk of hybrid cars in the media lately, thought I would join the spirit! Here I am enjoying my new favorite hybrid-toy. Is is a rope running through a rubber ball, so I can play tug-of-war and fetch at the same time!

Locks of Love

My mom looks different.

This weekend we went home to Mutti and Pappa-Dino's house for the celebration of his 57th birthday (Whoop, Whoop). When mom and Mutti went out on Saturday afternoon, Mom came back with all of her hair cut off! Boy, I was surprised!

Mom said that since she cut off 8 inches, the salon, Technicolor Salon, was going to donate it to Locks of Love. L.O.L. is an organization that donates hair pieces to kids suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

I wuff the new 'do, don't you?

Hugs

After her most recent visit to my blog, Jade wanted to point out that we have shared some tender embraces over the past year, as well...

Shout-out to Spirit and Ruby

For the past couple months I've been corresponding with a Weimeraner puppy, named Spirit. She lives down in Maryland and she recently got a new Vizsla sister, Ruby. I think this photo of them just sums up both breeds.

I wuff Spirit and Ruby.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5

One of the best things about New York City in the Summer are the free Concerts in the Parks. They are held in parks through out the city and it are attended by thousands and thousands of people.

Last night I went to my very first concert in the Park: the New York Philharmoic playing Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. The concert was hosted on the "Great Lawn", and we found a nice spot to put down our blanket. It was amazing: the music, the wine, the lightning bugs.

A truly enjoyable evening.

But then it rained....

Wait... Rain is too small of a word.

It was a torrential downpour, soaking me through my fur! There was lightening and thunder streaking across the sky! Nature's fireworks -- as a follow-up to the man-made ones we just saw at the end of the concert.

It was one long walk home.

Chef Glenn

I wuff when Glenn cooks for mom.

He always puts the food sooooo-o close to the edge of the table!

Last night he made us Pasta Primavera with a bunch of veggies he got from the Union Square greenmarket.

Glenn wuffs greenmarkets. He even lobbied to get some on the Upper East Side where he lives, because before they had been sorely lacking in these types of open air markets.

Out of that movement, he has started a website called the Upper Green Side and he is in negotiations with mom to get her to design their logo. One the website people can learn all about green living in New York City. I don't know what green living is but it sure smells delicious.

Here are some people enjoying the greenmarket at St. Peter's on 82nd street.

Staten Island Getaway

On Saturday, Mom, Glenn and I went out to another island: Staten Island. It's just across the water from where I live, which is called Manhattan, and it's very close to New Jersey.

We met the McAnanamas!

That's Glenn's family. His older sister is moving to North Carolina (I've been there and it's great!) tomorrow, so Glenn wanted to wish her "bon voyage." While Ms. Susan put together the finishing touches on the BBQ fixin's, Mr. George gave me a tour of the Island. Now, I know all the places Glenn went to school!

Ms. Susan and Mr. George put out quite a spread, complete with STEAK! CORN ON THE COB! BAKED BEANS! Mmmm...delicious.

While everyone else was finishing their food, I made myself at home in their backyard and both on and below their deck. I even made friends with the dog next door, though he was behind a fence so we couldn't rough-house like I wanted to.

I think I made a lasting impression on everyone. Maybe they will come see me in Riverside Park and I can show them where I like to hang out with friends!

Woah.

Pool party, anyone?

Hot Steppin'

Today has been so hot that I can't even keep my paws on the pavement.

Mom and I stick to the shady side of the street, but the full sun sometimes can't be avoided (like when we are waiting to cross the intersections) so I do a hot-step. I shift my weight, lifting each of my paws so that I get a few seconds of rest. Mom says it looks like I am doing a Piaffe, a dressage move where the horse is in an extremely collected trot, staying in place, carring most of its weight on its hindquarters.

Add "pony" to my list of talents!

Happy Anniversary!

Today is my mom's and my one-year anniversary!

One year ago today, I came to this city to find my way and learn about life.

And, boy, did I ever! Here is a poem I wrote to commemorate the occasion.

I caught pigeons,
I played in the park,
I met new friends,
and cried in the dark.

Mom has been the best,
always patient and kind,
teaching me lessons
without swatting my behind.

Ohio to North Carolina,
I've traveled near and far
keeping mom company,
while sleeping in the car.

I am so happy to be here,
in this harbor town of mine,
been here one year,
and feelin' just fine.

Lightning Flies

After the rainstorm yesterday, mom and I went out for our evening walk. The humidity and rain caused the lightning bugs to really go at it.

The night air was heavy, making the world seem distant, yet close. Flickering and flashing lights in the corners of my eyes kept me on constant point, seeking these tiny creatures, curious about just what they are. But I never got close enough to see for sure.

I wuff lightning bugs.

Triple Threat

Hazy.
Hot.
Humid.

Luckily, my Mom is nice and turned on the AC for me, so I have been basking in beautiful cool temperatures in the apartment. Mom doesn't get that pleasure though. She just called to tell me there is NO AC in her office.

Ha, Ha!

oh -- what did I just hear?
Thunder boomers are rolling in!

Killer Bee Swarm!

This morning as Laika and I romped and played, I came across a new kind of bird -- mom called it a "bee."

I pointed. I lunged. And I got stung!

I never had a bird bite back before. Ouch! Mom told Ms. Deb about it and found out that Ms. Deb and her gang got attacked by a whole swarm of the killer bird-bee thingys. Duck, Ms. Deb!

A Sunday Hike

Today, Mom, Glenn, the Potters, and I went on a hike in the Hudson River Valley, near the West Point US Military Academy. Hoo-rah!

It was on a winding and steep trail near Storm King Mountain and looked down onto the Hudson river.

Wikipedia was nice enough to provide some history about the region so that we could study-up before the hike.

In 1965 the mountain became the focus of a landmark environmental battle when local activists formed the Scenic Hudson Preservation Coalition (today known as just Scenic Hudson) to fight against plans by utility Consolidated Edison to cut away part of the mountain near the river and build a pump storage power generator complete with transmission lines across it for an ambitious power generating scheme which would also have entailed creating a reservoir in much of what is now Black Rock Forest. In a lawsuit brought by the coalition, a judge ruled for the first time that aesthetic impacts could be considered in such projects. In 1979 Con Ed finally abandoned even a greatly scaled-down version of the project, and settled a parallel lawsuit brought against their Indian Point facility by agreeing to endow the Hudson River Foundation with $12 million.

After forest fires on the mountain during the dry summer of 1999, unexploded ordnance left over from 19th century artillery training at the nearby United States Military Academy was discovered in some areas close to the trails. As a result the mountain was closed to hiking until October 2002, when authorities could be sure it had been safely removed.

We hiked for three hours, covering about four miles. Or rather, Mom and rest of the group covered four miles, but for me and my running around like a puppy on speed, I probably covered twice that amount.

I went into creeks, up rock faces, over tall grass and almost caught myself a deer.

I did catch something else though! It was a tick! Mom identified it as an American Dog Tick, one that doesn't carry Lyme Disease -- Whew!

However, the American Dog Tick does carry another lovely disease: Rocky Mountain Fever. Mom will need to watch me to see if I show any symptoms: Fever, loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, and neurologic abnormalities. Redness of the eyes and a pussy discharge may also be seen and nasal discharge, coughing are frequent, too. Mom isn't too worried because in her research it says these ticks don't really settle into their blood meal and transmit disease until about five hours after being picked up. Mom found it at hour four.

Good work, Mom!

The little sucker's head was also not embedded in my skin yet, so she easily removed it with a tweezer and turned it into a crispy critter. En el fuego!

Representatives from Mouse Land

One of mom's best friends, Becky Matthews, and Ms. Becky's husband Mr. John came up on Friday to visit mom and meet me. After work, mom knew she had to get to work to make the apartment presentable, so based on her furious cleaning I knew we'd be having visitors.

All evening, every time the elevator doors opened in the hallway, I knew that someone was here to see us.

Sound the Alarm!

After the sixth time sounding the alarm, with no one actually knocking on our door, I finally just settled down and resolved to wait these visitors out.

Around 8:30, they finally arrived!

Ms. Becky and Mr. John were some great! They totally ignored mom and knew the pup to win-over was me! They rubbed my ears and belly. They talked in high-pitched voices. They even admired my nasty knuckle! Officially, they are now my favorite people ever!

I looked adoringly into John's eyes, working the cute hex of course, and he was smitten! Ha! My powers are so great!

It wasn't until John took out his camera, that I realized perhaps my powers are too great. He wouldn't stop taking photos. I finally had to hide behind mom's chair before he would put the camera away.

Mom said they live near a place called Disney World, that's run by a mouse named Mickey. I wonder if I could catch this little mouse? I wuff playing with the rats I see on our evening walks, so I bet chasing a mouse would be just as much fun!

After a little bit, Mom and the Matthews went out for dinner -- they had 10:45pm reservations at Mario Batali's restaurant, Babbo. I settled into my nap.

Around 1:40am, they finally arrived home full and tipsy, so I greeted them with licks and wiggles, and we all promptly fell back to sleep. Mom thought it best we sleep in, and since I had been practicing that at Ms. Deb's I was able to let them sleep until 8am. I'm such a great pup!

Once we all got up, we walked over to the east side to meet Glenn for brunch at Cilantro. Yummy! Mom brought me a rawhide!

I wuff eating al fresco!
